THE TOWER

My family and I arrived in this fishing town from the capital city two months ago. There was no other option, because of my dad’s job. We arrived in the middle of the summer and I can say that it was the most boring summer in my short life. I only took a stroll along the beach and visited the new neighbours’ houses.

But winter came and so did school. My school was an old building in the city centre. The city centre had a lot of houses which were crowned by a watchtower. This is typical of many fishing towns.
One morning I went to my school and one of these watchtowers attracted my attention. The tower was especially old and dark and its windows were almost off their hinges.
Every day I stared at the tower and asked myself what secret this tower could have, because I was sure that this tower held a secret. But the years went by and I could not find out the tower’s secret… I was already 13 years old and one day I saw something inside the tower; it was like a shadow… a couple of mysterious eyes which kept looking at me. Those eyes were staring at me and nobody seemed to notice.
The secret of the tower was only mine and I was the only one who could solve the mystery. I tried to find out details about the house and learned that the families who had lived there left the house shortly after. And the last tenant, a lonely man, had disappeared a long time ago.

One night I woke up startled. I had seen those eyes in my dreams. I had to face that obsession; I had to go to the tower…
I don’t remember a lot about that night… I don’t remember how I was able to enter the tower… I only remember the vision of those eyes.

Many years went by and now I can only remember vaguely the living room, the spider’s webs, and the smell of damp, the creaking of the stairs… and how I was possessed by that being.
Now, I look through the window of the tower and I just wait for other innocent eyes to stare at mine… or aren’t these really my eyes?
